real & adopted Swiss visit the cradle
Pilgrimage to the birthplace of Switzerland — an essential trek for each Swiss, once in their lifetime. With a third 10-year passport expiring soon, a few ‘real’ Swiss friends felt it was time to become ‘baptised’ (!)
The German lake name, ‘Vierwaldstättersee’, has its origins in the four historic ‘Waldstätten’ (lit. forest sites), the three original cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden, and the canton of Lucerne, which, together, surround Lake Lucerne. The foundation for the Swiss Confederation was laid in 1291 with the oath taken on the Rütli, a meadow above Lake Lucerne. — Rütli is the name in German and also used in English. Grütli is the name used in French and Italian.
